Ashtanga Yoga (Power Yoga)
Ashtanga Yoga is a powerful system of self-transformation which makes the body flexible, strong and healthy and brings mental clarity, peace and happiness. The asana sequences (sequences of postures) are intelligently designed to detoxify the body, align the muscular–skeletal system, purify the nervous system and generally bring good health and vitality to the practitioner. Or in other words it is a powerful and graceful aerobic exercise class that gets you fit and makes you sweat by way of a total body work out building strength and flexibility. It makes you feel great.
It is a challenge to all fitness levels and is an ideal system for anybody wanting to build and maintain an exhilarating and engaging exercise regime for life.
The class spirit is welcoming, sympathetic and committed, teaching a non–dogmatic, non–exclusive, non–injurious (both physical and mental) style of yoga. Students learn the sequence over time and take responsibility for their own practice. It is for any level of experience of yoga or none at all, as long as you are prepared for the challenge. With Ashtanga, flexibility and strength are inevitable with practice, not a pre–requisite to starting. The real effort comes in making the commitment to your self to learn and to get fit for life. The Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series is taught in the same way in the same order all over the world.

This is a new class and therefore effectively a beginner’s class. All postures will be explained in detail. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you wish to discuss any aspect of the practice.
Wear what will allow you to move and bend easily.
Yoga is usually practiced bare foot.
Bring a small towel – the aim is to sweat.
Bring a bottle of water for after the class.
Bring a yoga mat if you have one. ( I have some to borrow if required)
The Dance Studio is a fantastic new exercise space opened in summer 2010 at St Laurence School where dance is taught up to A level as part of the performance art programme. It has changing facilities and under floor heating with plenty of parking space available.
"If someone said to me, ‘You have 15 minutes, one hour, etc., do something good for yourself. You can use barbells, bicycles, or whatever,’ I would start doing the Ashtanga Yoga Salutations to the Sun and Primary Series. If someone can show me something better, I am ready to learn it. In my 30 years of searching, I have learned five or six systems of Yoga practice. For myself, I have not found a better physical, mental, and emotional fitness program than the Ashtanga Yoga system." David Williams.
(David Williams was one of the first two westerners to learn Ashtanga Yoga and still has a daily practice 37 years later).
